Kahavanu gold coins: type III:

The type III coin has previously been described as coarse and lacking the features and fineness of the earlier types. A recent discovery of a few Type III, 'Jasmine flower & chank' coins with extremely fine features proves that the type III too can be a handsome coin. Generally though expect coarse and rough features characteristic of impressions from overworked, worn dies.

The type III of the kahavanu is comprised of two well known varieties and a recently discovered, unique but important variety.

Ball and Annulet:

Jasmine Flower & Shank:

The fineness and detail of the type III coin above is very rarely met with, usually it is more like the first coin above.

Silver Type III coin:

Codrington in 'Ceylon Coins and Currency' mentions a damaged type III coin in silver apart from that the coin above is the only other reported specimen.

Double strike on one side:

Note the double head on this coin, clearly it has been struck twice, this coin is believed to be unique.
