Parakrama Bahu I: Perhaps the greatest Sinhalese king in history, certainly the most celebrated, Parakrama Bahu I (1153-1186) was the last of the great ancient rulers of ancient Ceylon and he is famous for his immense contribution to the irrigation system of the Island. It
is stated in the Chulavamsa that
Parakrama’s general Lankapura, after conquering the Pandya kingdom in Madura,
‘’introduced into the country everywhere for trade kahapanas
which were stamped with the name of the Ruler Parakrama’’. Perhaps here
the kahapana may be identified with
the king’s silver massa. The
massa coins of Parakramabahu I occur in silver as well as in white
metal, while there is a copper one eighth coin, all of which are extremely rare.
They are characterized by the occurrence of the Nagari legend Sri
Parakramabahu on the reverse.
After Parakramabahu, the throne passed to Nissanka Malla of the Kalinga dynasty.
