VOC Dump coinage of Ceylon: Owing to the constantly increasing shortage of small change in the province, the council of Colombo decided to have copper Stuivers struck in Ceylon. These are the famous 'VOC dump Stuivers' series of Ceylon and they were struck in the local mints in Colombo, Galle, Trincomalee and Jaffna. The dump coins were struck from 1783 (Colombo and Galle) and continued till 1794, although coins from that date and a few other dates, are of extreme rarity. Look for coins well struck with the monogram and the date clear; In the Trincomalee series, the coins are almost always of an irregular, mostly triangular shape. Look out for forgeries.
